Nepal’s Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to issue an interim order in a writ petition filed by the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction over the dispute concerning the official status of the Nepali Congress, effectively clearing the way for the Gagan Thapa–led faction in line with the Election Commission’s decision.
The petition, filed by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, was heard by a bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel.
Before deciding whether to issue an interim order, the bench summoned both parties for discussions. The Election Commission has already recognized the special general convention and updated the party’s central committee under Gagan Thapa’s leadership. Based on that decision, Thapa has finalized candidates in all 165 constituencies.
