Thapa elected as Nepali Congress leader

Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress (NC) at a critical juncture for the party, which is grappling with a deepening internal split and mounting challenges to restore its political strength and public credibility.

Thapa secured 6,584 votes, defeating his contender, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, who received 375 votes. According to the Election Committee, 7,039 of the 7,317 General Convention delegates cast their ballots, of which 54 were declared invalid.

Thapa’s election comes amid growing divisions within the country’s oldest democratic party. The faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba is preparing to hold a parallel convention, while senior leader Shekhar Koirala has yet to align himself with either faction, further complicating efforts to restore unity within the party.
