The internal rift within the Nepali Congress has taken a new turn, as two factions—one led by Purna Bahadur Khadka and the other by party president Gagan Kumar Thapa—have begun engaging in parallel activities.
Khadka recently convened a meeting of the Central Working Committee elected during the party’s 14th General Convention. This move has angered Thapa, who assumed the party presidency through a special convention.
The intra-party dispute has now reached the Supreme Court. After the Election Commission granted official recognition to the Thapa faction, the Khadka group filed a petition challenging the decision.
Party leaders have expressed concern over a possible split if immediate steps are not taken to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, the Thapa-led faction is reportedly preparing to take disciplinary action against members of the Khadka camp.
Amid the ongoing dispute, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba is currently in Hong Kong.
