Kathmandu: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) have signed a seven-point political agreement outlining power-sharing and electoral strategy ahead of the upcoming national elections.
According to the agreement, RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane will continue to lead the party organization, while Mayor Shah will be positioned as the prime ministerial candidate following the elections. The deal signals a strategic alignment between RSP’s party structure and Balen’s growing popular support, particularly among urban youth.
The agreement also formally claims political ownership of the Gen Z-led protests that took place in Kathmandu on September 8–9, framing them as part of a broader movement for political reform and accountability. In addition, both sides have agreed to open their platform to new and emerging political forces, emphasizing inclusion, alternative leadership, and generational change within Nepal’s political landscape. Political observers see the agreement as an attempt to consolidate anti-establishment sentiment and channel recent youth activism into an organized electoral force, potentially reshaping Nepal’s opposition politics.
