Nepal performs first sex change operation

For the first time in Nepal, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) has performed a successful sex change (male to female) operation.

“The operation was performed on a 25-year-old transgender resident of Janakpur, with female genital organs reconstructed by using male genital tissues,” the hospital announced in a statement on Sunday. The surgery took place during a special surgical camp program organized by the TUTH Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery from 26-29 May.

The procedure, which lasted over six hours, was performed by a team led by Dr Alireza Hamidian Jahromi. Dr Jayan Man Shrestha, head of the department, said TUTH now plans to launch its own gender affirmation clinic. The clinic will provide health services to transgender people who identify differently on social, mental, emotional and physical levels. Until now, sex change operations were only available abroad and they were expensive. The service will greatly benefit Nepal’s transgender community.  According to Dr Shrestha, the surgery would cost Rs 150,000 to Rs 200,000. Dr Ishwar Lohani added a dedicated gender affirmation clinic at the hospital will be opened soon to provide regular services.  “The hospital has formed a team to ensure the continuity and accessibility of gender-affirming surgeries,” he added.
