KATHMANDU — The Nepali Congress (NC) is preparing to postpone its upcoming 15th General Convention due to delays in completing lower-level party elections across the country.
Originally scheduled to run from October 2 to 5 (Ashoj 16–19), the central convention will likely be pushed back by a few days because ward, municipal, and constituency-level conventions have fallen behind schedule.
Postponement Likely by 2–3 Days, Says General Secretary
Speaking to Nepalkhabar, Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradip Paudel indicated that the delay would be brief while local results are finalized.
“It depends on how many provincial and house of representatives constituency conventions are completed today and tomorrow, and how many remain. Based on that, it might need to be postponed by two to three days,” Paudel said.
Paudel clarified that any formal decision to reschedule the central convention must be approved by the party’s higher governing bodies.
“The date for the Central General Convention is decided by the Executive Committee or the Working Committee meeting. The Election Committee is adjusting the schedules for the lower levels according to the situation,” he added.
Status of Lower-Level Conventions
While the initial phase of local voting has made progress, significant backlogs remain at the municipal and regional levels:
- Ward Conventions (Began Sept 19 / Ashoj 3): Nearly completed across most districts.
- Municipal Conventions (Scheduled Sept 23 / Ashoj 7): Only about 50% completed.
- Provincial & Parliamentary Constituency Conventions (Scheduled Sept 26 / Ashoj 10): Only about 50% completed.
Party leaders are expected to convene a Central Working Committee or Central Executive Committee meeting shortly to announce the revised dates for the national convention.
