Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to visit China from August 30 to September 3, where he will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and attend events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The visit comes at the official invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO—a regional political, economic, and security alliance that includes major powers such as China, Russia, India, and Pakistan, along with several Central Asian states. Nepal holds the status of dialogue partner in the organization.
During his visit, Prime Minister Oli will deliver an address at the SCO Plus Summit in Tianjin on September 1, where he is expected to highlight Nepal’s commitment to regional cooperation, economic connectivity, and multilateral diplomacy. The summit provides an important platform for engagement with both full and observer members of the organization.
In addition to his participation in the summit, PM Oli is scheduled to hold bilateral talks in Beijing with President Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese officials. The discussions are expected to focus on deepening Nepal-China cooperation in areas such as infrastructure development under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), trade, tourism, and energy.
This will be a significant diplomatic engagement for Nepal, as it seeks to strengthen ties with its northern neighbor while maintaining a balanced foreign policy between China and India. The visit also comes at a time when regional dynamics are rapidly shifting, with increasing focus on economic resilience, security cooperation, and post-pandemic recovery.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Oli is also expected to meet several other world leaders attending the event, providing Nepal an opportunity to enhance its international profile and explore broader avenues of cooperation beyond its immediate neighborhood.
